This year, it achieved a 100% rating in parameters such as water content, sucrose, electrical conductivity, accuracy of data on labels and aesthetic impression of the entire honey package.
“Beekeeping has been taking place at Prague Airport since November 2011 for the purpose of biomonitoring, ie to evaluate the effects of air transport on the quality of the environment. Poll and honey analyzes are performed by accredited laboratories of the University of Chemical Technology. Monitoring with the help of bees is only a small part of the comprehensive environmental monitoring, within which the airport monitors approximately 40 parameters beyond the scope of legislative obligations, “said Soňa Hykyšová, Director of Environmental Protection at Prague Airport.
High-tech bee tracking
For the second year in a row, Prague Airport is monitoring bees using a system for electronic monitoring of hives – ProBee. The weight of the hives, the temperature in the bee tuft and the sound effects of the hive are monitored. Weight monitoring will tell beekeepers when it is necessary to add extensions, when to start honey extraction or whether the bees have sufficient supplies for the winter. In contrast, temperature monitoring helps determine the appropriate timing of autumn varroasis treatment. Bees make sounds of different frequencies, from which it is possible to know whether, for example, lack of supplies or, conversely, a significant clutch, overheating of the bee colony, illness or swarm mood, etc.
The ProBee system is connected to a powerful IBM computer center, where acoustic measurements are analyzed.
