Industrial hall at the Brinker Hafen in Hanover is on fire | NDR.de – Nachrichten – Lower Saxony

A major fire broke out in the Brinker Hafen in Hanover on Friday afternoon. At times it burned in three halls of a company that recycles steel dust and aluminum salt slag, among other things.
According to information from the NDR in Lower Saxony, the flames are still raging in a multi-storey building. There the fire burns uncontrollably. The fire brigade initially no longer wants to send emergency services into the hall – apparently the risk of collapse is too great. “I expect the operation to continue for several hours,” said a spokesman on Friday afternoon.
Some of the stored substances react with water
The extinguishing work is dangerous for the fire brigade. In addition to falling parts of the building, this is also due to the chemicals in the halls. Some of the stored substances react with water, the spokesman said. Chemicals such as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid are kept in stock for the work of the recycling company. Several large storage containers, each with 30,000 liters of chemicals, had been secured from the flames, it said.

Residents should keep windows and doors closed
In the afternoon, clouds of black smoke could be seen for miles over the industrial halls in the north of the city. So far, however, the fire brigade’s measuring devices have not produced any indication that harmful pollutants are spreading over the city with the cloud of smoke. Residents in northern Hanover are asked to keep windows and doors closed.
People weren’t hurt
According to the police, a witness noticed smoke on Friday afternoon and reported the fire. According to the first findings of the emergency services, the fire broke out in an empty hall and the flames spread quickly. There is still no information on the cause of the fire. According to previous knowledge, people were not injured.
