Burglars are up to mischief in the cover of darkness. Your favorite season starts in fall, when the days get shorter and the nights longer. In their search for the perfect robbery object, they keep an eye out for dark apartments or open windows.
Always lock the apartment door
“Burglars often look to see if the lights are on. Not only at night, but also during the day, ”explains media spokeswoman Carmen Surber from the Zurich cantonal police. “Leave the lights on,” advises Surber.
The Zurich canton police have been running a prevention campaign against break-ins for some time. Carmen Surber knows what to watch out for in order to avoid break-ins as much as possible. Because: “Every break-in is one too many.”
What else can you do? “Always lock your apartment door when you leave,” advises Surber. It is also important that the main entrance door of apartment buildings is always locked.
Have you ever been broken into?
Windows that are tilted are also dangerous. “They’re very easy to open,” says Surber.
Don’t play the hero
“Particularly popular destinations are in well-developed metropolitan areas, for example with public transport or motorway connections.” But there is also good news. The number of break-ins has been in recent years.
But what should you do if you catch the burglar red-handed on his way home? “Don’t play the hero,” advises Surber. It is always better to call the police directly on 117.
Most of the time there is no danger from burglars. “Most of the time they are not armed.”
Alert police at 117
If a break-in has already taken place, the police must be alerted immediately. Furthermore, apartment or house owners should not touch anything until the police have secured all evidence.
Kapo Zurich also offers to send a security advisor to the property. These give tips on how the home can be made safer. Around 400 vulnerability analyzes are issued annually, with a higher rate in autumn.
