The right to propose the post always rests with the strongest political group. It is parliamentary custom that the candidate IS then elected with a larger majority in plenary. Then Buchner will give a speech.
The parliamentary session is opened by the senior president, also the youngest member of the new legislature. The honor goes to the CDU politician Kurt Wansner, who is 74 years old. The youngest member of parliament is Klara Schedlich from the Greens at the age of 21.

As in the previous legislative period, six parliamentary groups are represented in the 147-member House of Representatives. The strongest parliamentary group is the SPD with 36 members, ahead of the Green parliamentary group with 32 members. The CDU has 30 members, the left have 24. The AfD group has 13 members, the FDP group 12.
The election on September 26th was overshadowed by numerous mishaps and organizational problems. After constitutions or objections against results that have already been received, the Berlin Court of Justice must decide whether the election must be repeated in part or even in full. The constitution of parliament and the process of forming a government with the ongoing coalition negotiations between the SPD, the Greens and the Left are unaffected by this. A decision by the Constitutional Court is not expected until next year.
