Prague is introducing gastro-waste collection: it uses leftovers from lunch and produces biogas
At the beginning of 2021, a new law came into force, which determines how much waste Prague must handle in total. The law mandates municipalitiesthat the volume of recyclable components must be at least 55 percent by 2025, and by 2035 it will be ten percent more. Gastro-waste makes up a large part of mixed waste, usually 30-40 percent, so the municipality decided to launch a project aimed at its collection.
Schools welcome the idea
The municipality offered waste collection mainly to the schools it establishes. “Since September, 28 schools have joined the project, mostly high schools or grammar schools. We are thus responding to a law that has set very specific goals for municipalities, as waste generators, associated with achieving the rate of municipal waste sorting, “said Deputy Mayor Petr Hlubuček (STAN)
The Bubeneč Business Academy, for example, has shown interest in the service. “Previously, the waste from the school canteen was taken away from us by the Prague services, but we had to pay for it, this service from the municipality is free, “Said school principal Radka Nováková. Her colleague from Gymnázium Na Vítězné pláni sees it similarly. “We always dealt with the leftovers from the school canteen on our own axis, but it was never completely set up, we will be primarily worried about this program, “Adds the director of the grammar school Jaroslav Mervínský.
Restaurants and supermarkets also need to be involved
The municipality offers two types of 30-liter and 120-liter containers. Everyone can choose the frequency of removal, from the frequency twice a week to the daily collection. Private individuals can also participate in the projecti, which is also the goal of Prague, which wants as many entities as possible, both public and private, to participate in the sorting of gastro-waste.
Anyone who is interested in the collection of gastro-waste, just fill out the form on the newly created one the web, the relevant official shall contact him within 14 days. As for private companies and restaurants, they will of course pay for the pick-up. The price starts at 5 thousand per month, the maximum amount then climbs to 80 thousand – in this case it is a 120 liter container, which would be exported 7 times a week.
Contracts for the collection of gastro-waste were concluded for the time being until December 2022. However, the whole project is only at the beginning, if Prague wants to meet the obligation imposed by law, in addition to the restaurant, it will have to involve smaller tradesmen and especially supermarkets in the project.
“We will collect the sorted waste water in cooperation with the Prague services to the biogas station in Přibyšice, where it will be used to produce biogas, which we can use. drown, shine or by him drive cars, “ Hlubuček concluded.
