At the Zuidasdok in Amsterdam: “Much larger visitors than I expected”
The Zuidasdok construction project in Amsterdam opened its doors today especially for interested parties. Visitors were guided around with small trains in order to be able to observe a behavior on the construction site between the tracks.
The visitors today enthusiastic. “Impressive, much bigger than I expected,” said one of them. Other visitors don’t really see what it looks like yet. “I like watching this, but it’s still hard to imagine what it will be like.” Not surprising, because the Zuidasdok is currently still a major construction site, but that will change within two years when the station concourse is completed. An extension of the platforms, an underground car tunnel on the A10 and new tram and bus stations are also part of the construction project.
Difficult to build
All those renovations on a small part of the Zuidas, it is quite a challenge. Michiel Jonker, spokesperson for the Zuidasdok, explains in the field that it is sometimes difficult to build. “Here we are at a place where you can see exactly how difficult it is to build on that stamp. Behind this is the A10. Here is the track of the trains and the new passenger hall will soon follow with the tracks on top.”
In recent years, the organization of the mega construction project had to deal with significant setbacks. The project would cost hundreds of millions of euros extra and suffered early delays. The new station hall is expected to be completed in 2025. The entire project will probably not be ready until 2036.
