Russia abstained from voting in UN Security Council on mandate on referendum in Sahara – Politics
UN, October 29. / TASS /. Russia abstained from voting in the UN Security Council on the resolution of the US draft on the extension of the mandate of the Mission of the World Organization for the Referendum in the Sahara. As on Friday, Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, the document did not take into account well-grounded Russian remarks.
“Russia abstained in voting on the draft UN resolution on the referendum in the Sahara prepared by the United States,” Polyansky said. It is assumed that the resolution presented today does not reflect an objective picture. “
The situation in the Sahara has been the subject of a protracted international dispute for many decades. The independent registration of the Sahara is seeking the POLISARIO Front, created in the mid-1970s, which, after serving the Spanish colonialists, proclaimed the Sahara Arab Democratic Republic and, with the support of Algeria, launched an armed struggle.
Fighting in the conflict zone continued until 1991. Despite the various peaceful challenges of the international community, it has not been possible to resolve in any way because of the diametrically opposed positions of the parties.
Mar considers Western Sahara to be its integral part. Since June 2007, Morocco and Frente Polisario have held four rounds of negotiations, all of which have ended in vain.
