On September 28, a 16-year-old Sudanese migrant died after falling from a truck in an activity zone in Marck-en-Calaisis.
Associations boycott the prefectural meeting
Lately state policy has been strongly denounced by associations. In Calais, two activists and a chaplain of Secours Catholique have stopped eating since October 11, to denounce the violence of the repeated dismantling of camps. In a spirit of “dialogue“, the prefecture is planning a meeting with the associations this Friday, October 22 to present them with a new proximity action protocol. Among the proposals: a place of restitution “personal effects that migrants could lose during evacuation operations“.
During the day, the Secours Catholique du Pas-de-Calais, Médecin du monde, the Auberge des migrants and Utopia 56 announced do not attend this meeting following the death of the migrant in Calais. “We thought we would go there and wanted to hear your proposals to respond to the demands of the three hunger strikers. However, as has been done for 5 years now, a commemoration in tribute to the deceased will take place at the same time as the meeting. We will be going there and will therefore not be able to be present at the meeting to which you have invited us.“, write the associations in a letter sent to the sub-prefect. A tribute to the deceased migrant took place this Friday at 6.30 p.m., on Place Richelieu in Calais.
