Quake in the Hanover region on Wednesday: what’s behind it?
Around 4.45 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, a mysterious tremor could be felt in parts of the surrounding area and in some districts of Hanover. Local residents also report on social media that there was a deep rumble that lasted for seconds in the air. In any case, there was no thunderstorm at the time. Larger and conspicuous aircraft were also not seen in the sky. It is unclear what the phenomenon was about. The fire brigade and police did not register any alarms.
The ominous quake is said to have been particularly clear in the north and northwest of the Hanover region. On Facebook, numerous users from Isernhagen, Langenhagen, Neustadt and Seelze, for example, report on vibrating windows, wobbling staircases and furniture. The phenomenon could be heard even further. This is reported from different parts of Hanover, but also from Uetze.
Federal Institute for Geosciences: It wasn’t an earthquake
Meanwhile, two possible causes can be ruled out. Among other things, it is suspected in the social networks that it is target practice at the military training areas in Bergen and the Ostenholz Moor. As a Bundeswehr spokesman said on request, there was still practice there today. At around 4.45 p.m., however, the maneuver had long been completed. He also doubts that the exercise can be heard that far.
An earthquake can currently also be ruled out. This is what Monika Bischoff from the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) says. “Seismic activity can occur in the Hanover region, but we couldn’t find anything for Wednesday afternoon,” she says. It may be a supersonic flight, she suspects.
Quake is discussed on the Internet
Meanwhile, Facebook users report how they experienced the phenomenon. “With us in Fuhrberg you even noticed it on the floor and the windows shook,” writes a user from Isernhagen. “Strangely enough, we also had vibrations at the same time in Altwarmbüchen and Varrelheide, our living room door hummed for a long time,” is another comment. “In Neuwarmbüchen I could only hear a strange grumble. We were amazed and couldn’t assign it, ”it continues.
