They canceled the sidewalk because of the parking lot. People drive through cars in Sokolská Street
Drivers now have more space for vertical parking. On the other hand, there is a greater danger for pedestrians. To pass, there must be either a sidewalk on the opposite side of the road or a narrow corridor around parked cars. They can also use alternative routes through Tyršův sad or Sušilova street. But people are bothered by such restrictions. In addition, there are not enough pedestrian crossings in the treated locality.
Ondřej Fadrhonc, who lives in the nearby Botanická Street, called the reconstruction of the car park useless. “Nothing but the yellow stops has changed here, you just couldn’t park here for three weeks,” the young man told the Equality editor on the spot. There are new safety barriers on the ground at each parking space. They help leave the passage around the cars. However, drivers often overcome them and thus interfere with the pedestrian area.
The reconstruction of Sokolská Street is in charge of the employees of Brno Roads. They made the necessary repairs to the existing areas in order to maintain their functionality and eliminate all defects. “During the inspection, the road administrator found out the emergency condition of the retaining wall near the Sokol Brno buildings, the existing parking space and the service sidewalk for getting out of the car, where parking with an overhang was possible,” said their spokesperson Vladimíra Navrátilová. According to her, the reconstruction did not change the parking regime of the vertical parking space. In addition, it does not have to be used for parking vehicles or pedestrian areas to adjust the dimensions. “The change occurred only in the height arrangement, due to better use of slope conditions and improved water outflow,” says Navrátilová.
Some local newly renovated parking lots do not matter. “I’m used to walking across the sidewalk, so it doesn’t bother me that much. I believe that it can be unpleasant for mothers with prams, “said Radek Pinkava.
Pedestrians on Veveří solve similar problems. There were narrow corridors left for them, only a meter wide in the tightest places. A large part of the sidewalks is occupied by cars parked behind blue lines.
