A new subway for 220 million crowns from Prague’s main railway station in Žižkov opened to the public on Friday. It will be possible to walk through the railway station from Vrchlický sady to Seifertova street. In addition to the stairs, the Žižkov exit from the underpass will also be provided by a pair of escalators and a lift. In addition, a new station will be opened for passengers in Prague on the line between Prague’s main railway station and the Hostivaří-Railway Administration opened a Prague-Zahradní Město stop at midnight.

The construction of the subway took fromroughly 16 months. At the opening of the underpass, Minister of Transport Karel Havlíček (for YES) reminded that the construction was the primary crossing of the inhabitants of Žižkov and Vinohrady. “Eight years ago, a group of university students calculated that about 1,200 people would cross the dormitory in one work shift. Now people no longer have to have a reason to gamble in such a dangerous way, “said the minister.
“The construction work lasted approximately 16 months and included, among other things, the relocation of tracks, the existing cable collector and water supply and sewer modifications. In the coming weeks, only finishing work will take place, to modify the surroundings of the exit from the underpass and along part of the road in the complex, “Dušan Gavenda, a spokesman for the Railway Administration, told Radio DAB Prague.
Reconstruction of the Art Nouveau Fanta building is also continuing at Prague’s main railway station. The renovation of the facade, which is followed by the repair of the interior spaces, should be completed soon. It started this year. The administration also wants to present other projects on the prepared route at the airport in October.

The new station is at the intersection with the growing Průběžná Street. It consists of two island and one external platform, to which stairs and elevators lead. These connect the entire terminal, which also includes tram and bus stops in the subway. For the time being, passenger trains of the S9 line and express trains of the R49 line will stop at the new station, and from December also the expressways of the R17 line.
The station is part of a complete reconstruction of the corridor. As part of this, the Prague-Vršovice station was reconstructed, which was expanded by a fourth platform and also an underpass towards Nusle. A new security device was also created in the stations. Furthermore, a new Eden stop was opened on the line last year.
The whole project of modernization of a part of the Prague railway cost 5.3 million crowns, other costs were covered by money from European funds.
