Pisa is confirmed at the top in the treatment and research on thyroid cancer
Pisa, 24 September 2021 – For the 100 most cited articles on thyroid cancer in the world, it is second only to two colleagues, James A. Fagin (of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York) and Martin J. Schlumberger (of the Institut Gustave Roussy of Paris), in the bibliometric analysis of Expertscape.com, one of the main bodies that elaborate rankings of professionals and institutions based on publications in over 29,000 biomedical journals.
Rossella Elisei, associate professor of Endocrinology at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine of the University of Pisa as well as endocrinology in the Aoup Endocrinology Unit 1, is in fact among the scholars with one of the highest Impact Factors as first author in research that they mainly concern medullary thyroid cancer.
A pupil of Professor Aldo Pinchera, she immediately took care of patients suffering from thyroid cancer, both at a health care and research level, gaining experience in laboratory activities abroad: in Brussels, from which then the creation of the biology laboratory in Pisa. molecular in Endocrinology from which, over the years, fundamental study data for research in this sector have been obtained; and then in the USA, in the molecular biology laboratory of Professor James Fagin. Since 2002, Professor Elisei has been in charge of the oncology sector of the Endocrinology Unit 1, with over 10,000 patients with thyroid cancer from all over Italy. Numerous international awards both in the USA (“Light for Life” award in 2011) and in Europe (award of the European Thyroid Association and the British Thyroid Association in 2018 and 2020).
Results that are the result of a team work of all the Aoup Endocrinology, in collaboration with Endocrine Surgery, Pathological Anatomy and all the other specialists involved in the care pathways of thyroid patients.
