Della Vedova at the IAEA in Vienna: warning to Iran and North Korea for denuclearization
VIENNA, 21 SEPTEMBER – Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Benedetto Della Vedova spoke today on a national basis at the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (Aiea) underway in Vienna. “We are deeply concerned by the serious difficulties that the Iranian Nuclear Program Action Plan (JCPoA) is encountering and we hope that the parties will continue the negotiations for a solution of the unresolved points. Italy asks theIran full implementation of the obligations established by the Iranian nuclear agreement and withdrawal from uranium enrichment activities “, said the undersecretary, also underlining the importance that the North Korea avoid further provocations and embark on a path of “complete, verifiable and irreversible” denuclearization.
Della Vedova in Vienna also had an interview with the director general of the IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi, with whom he took stock of the negotiations on the Iranian nuclear dossier and the collaboration between Italy and the Agency. “We took stock of the negotiations on the Iranian nuclear dossier and on the excellent collaboration betweenItaly and IAEA. In this regard, the representative of the Foreign Ministry paid a visit to the pavilion of the ICTP International Center for Theoretical Physics which is based in Trieste. Here he met the director of the Center Atish Dabholkar who updated him on a new joint research project with the IAEA and on the Master for Advanced Studies in Medical Physics in collaboration with the University of Trieste.
Yesterday Della Vedova had met the director of the UN headquarters in Vienna, Ghada Fathy Waly, with whom he had reiterated the close collaboration between Italy and UNODC, the UN agency for the fight against crime, for the implementation of the Convention of Palermo against the transnational crime wanted by Giovanni Falcone. The need for a common strategy to manage the consequences of the crisis in Afghanistan was also underlined during the meeting and the challenges it poses for human rights, illicit trafficking and in the fight against international terrorism.
Finally, the Undersecretary met with Li Yong, Director General of the United Nations Office for Industrial Development (UNIDO), with whom Italy shares the goal of sustainable and inclusive economic development at a global level, in line with the ‘United Nations 2030 Agenda. (@OnuItalia)
