Police and inspectors discovered the unauthorized growing room on June 17 in a family house in Prague 4. On the spot, they found barrels with mung bean sprouts, which, according to the police, were further distributed from this growing room to a Prague market. “All the detected sprouts were devalued with the help of food paint and the owner was ordered to dispose of them, which he will have to prove subsequently,” said police spokesman Jan Daněk.
Failure to comply with the main growing conditions for mungo keys, according to the CAFIA, carries the risk of serious diseases that can lead to death.
“Growing and producing mung keys is a microbiologically risky process. Therefore, establishments where germination is valid must be approved by the CAFIA before they start producing sprouts. The manufacturer must approve the production by the CAFIA to pass the inspection and comply with a number of legal requirements. In particular, it is about meeting specific microbiological values associated with the cultivation of food that is prone to contamination by bacteria, such as Escherichia coli producing shiga toxins, “explained the inspector’s spokesman Pavel Kopřiva.
