Prague wants speed limits for electric scooters, it is preparing a novel
Representatives of the capital on Thursday approved that Prague will prepare this amendment and submit it to the Chamber of Deputies. Prague municipal politicians have long criticized electric scooters for endangering pedestrians. They also don’t like being stored in inappropriate places.
The plan was submitted by the opposition representative Tomáš Portlík (ODS) together with the mayor’s deputy for transport Adam Scheinherr (Prague himself). The deputies stated that the limit of 20 hours per hour may be too high in the case of pedestrian zones and sidewalks, and that the city will suggest the possibility of reducing it with the help of traffic signs.
Bicycles, scooters and other similar means of transport are prohibited on the sidewalks as standard, they are only allowed on some. The same is true for pedestrian zones.
Memorandum with operators
At the same time, the council took note of the draft memoranda with the operators of shared electric scooters and bicycles, which the city wants to discuss with the city districts. The city council has also been given the task of security so that city police officers can more control and enforce the existing rules.
In the past, shared electric scooters, especially in the historic center, provoked criticism from local governments and local residents. Lime, which is presented as an ecological mode of transport, is the first to start operating in the metropolis.
However, local governments point out the fact that it is used mainly by tourists and often behaves ruthlessly when driving or parking. Segway vehicles, for example, have faced the same criticism in the past, and the municipality has achieved a ban with the help of changes in the law.
