Prague has kicked off the start of the construction of the first section of metro D, the state has 52 billion
This follows from a document approved by the Prague councilors today. According to the document, construction could begin this October. The transport company (DPP) completed part of the geological survey on Pankrác last summer, the entire survey will be completed this September. Metro D in the first phase connecting Pankrác and Písnice. The Prague representatives will still discuss the document. The price of the construction is criticized by the opposition ANO, according to some of whose representatives the estimated price has increased disproportionately in recent years.
“This is a representative press, so as soon as it is approved by the council, the DPP can start construction,” said Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Prague Sobě). However, the exact date of construction cannot be said. The city and the DPP still have to wait for the resolution of objections to the building permit and the decision of the Office for the Protection of Economic Competition regarding the competition for contractors.
The smallest operable section of the new route is the one mentioned above, on which the Pankrác stations are planned, which will be a transfer station to line C, as well as Olbrachtova, Nádraží Krč, Nemocnice Krč and Nové Dvory. There will be turning tracks at both ends of this section. “There are no turning tracks in the shorter section, and it, including other connections, cannot be operated efficiently,” the document says.
Take a look at what metro D stations look like:
Overall, the city will gradually draw on construction. For this year, the construction should cost 0.17 billion, and on the contrary, it will have to spend the most money in 2027, when it will be 9.65 billion. The last payments are scheduled for 2029, namely 0.56 billion. “The outlook for the next years will be specified in accordance with the implementation and preparation process,” the document says.
The price of the building is criticized by opposition representative and deputy mayor of Prague 11 Ondřej Prokop (ANO). “I absolutely do not understand how there could be such a dramatic increase in costs in such a short period of time. Under former mayor Adriana Krnáčová, the construction of eight stations was prepared for 39 billion, and today the council approved the construction of only five stations without a depot at a cost of over 52 billion,” said Prokop. At the same time, he stated that in recent years, subway lines were built abroad at a lower price.

Scheinherr disagrees with the criticism. Compared to previous plans, the price of construction work has been significantly increased and inflation has also progressed. Moreover, according to the square, it was included in the project only now, in the past it was not included in the estimates.
DPP completed a geological survey at two of the four sites last summer. In the places of the completed survey, he subsequently carried out further exploratory boreholes, which will be part of the future metro areas. The remaining two will be surveyed until September of this year. Most of the tunnels from the geological survey will be part of the future metro D.
In the first phase, the subway will be built between Pankrác and Nový Dvory and will then continue to Depo Písnice. In the future, the section from Pankrác to Náměstí Míru is to be built. It has not yet been decided where the metro will lead from Náměstí Míru. One of the variants was Republic Square, according to the other, the route should head to Žižkov and then to Vysočany. According to this year’s update, the total expected price is 97.79 billion crowns and the investor is DPP.
