Wizz Air – is also moving around Košice from Prague
Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air will cancel its base in Košice in eastern Slovakia in mid-May after approximately three years of operation, as well as most scheduled flights from the local airport. Wizz Air announced in a press release today. The airlines announced in January that they would cancel their base at Václav Havel Airport in Prague this year and reduce the number of routes.
“After careful consideration, we have decided to adjust the plan of our routes in Košice and move capacity to other routes with higher demand. However, we continue to operate the popular connection from Košice to London-Luton on a daily basis,” said George Michalopoulos, the airline’s commercial director. Last month, the carrier announced plans to enter the Austrian market.
Wizz Air opened its base at the airport in Košice, which is the second largest airport in Slovakia in terms of the number of passengers carried, in June 2015. The carrier offers regular connections from Košice to four destinations.
The executive director of Košice Airport, Michael Tmej, made no secret of his reaction by saying that the airport’s decision surprised him unpleasantly. He added that the routes canceled by the carrier were doing well and that the airport was working to increase them.
