The Alzheimer’s center fire in Roztoky caused two dead and over 50 injured
Two people died in a fire at the Alzheimer’s Center in Roztoky near Prague. Firefighters found them during the fire and advancing through the building. The rescue service said on Twitter. Another 55 people were injured, two are in critical condition. This is one of the most tragic homes in the elderly in recent years. According to a preliminary estimate, the fire caused about 70 million crowns of damage, firefighters said on the site.
A large fire broke out on Wednesday evening. On Thursday around 03:00, firefighters began to dismantle the building’s construction, and around 04:00 the fire came under control. The crackdown continues, firefighters said after 6 p.m. Twitter. There are still about nine units on site, dismantling the structures, especially the roof. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Once all the outbreaks have been extinguished, there will be at least a 12-hour inspection and, of course, an investigation,” said a spokeswoman for the fire brigade.

“Unfortunately, the Central Bohemian firefighters discovered two dead people and one person with a moderate injury, which our rescuers took by ambulance to the Kladno Regional Hospital,” said the rescuers.
Captain Petra Pecková (STAN) did not want to comment on the tragic consequences of the fire. “The comments concern the evidence of the persons on the part of the operator I stick to,” she wrote on Twitter. The work of firefighters was appreciated by the mayor of Roztoky, Jan Jakob (TOP 09). According to him, all clients of the Alzheimer’s Center are professionally taken care of. Some clients ended up in similar facilities and some in hospitals. The municipality has made its premises available to the center’s operator, the mayor said.
Tereza Sýkora Fliegerová, a spokeswoman for Central Bohemian firefighters, told Radiožurnál that firefighters would intervene at the scene of the fire at least until Thursday morning.
The event was reported on Wednesday at 19:15. Firefighters evacuated seniors from the burning building in Nádražní Street along the adjustment ladders. According to Sýkora Fliegerová, the building was completely hit by the fire, it was no longer possible to get outside. Regional rescue service spokeswoman Monika Novakova said staff left the facility in front of paramedics. A firefighting evacuation bus also arrived, transporting 13 clients without injury to a similar center in the South Town.
Rescuers announced a so-called trauma plan due to the fire on Wednesday evening, for example in events with a larger number of injured. “There are minor injuries and the so-called inhalation trauma dominates, which means inhaling the combustion products,” said Pavel Rusý, director of the Central Bohemian Medical Rescue Service, about the injured in the fire. “The scope of the intervention was a relatively exceptional number,” he added.
The Roztoky Alzheimer’s Center has a capacity of 60 beds. In addition to a home with a special regime, it also provides day hospital services. The operator is the Domov Alzheimer group, which operates similar facilities in Most, Přerov and Lázně Darkov in the Karviná region.
Over the last ten years, fires in nursing homes or nursing homes have claimed two lives once, in January 2013. Two senior women died in a fire in a nursing home in Příbor in the Novojičín region, and another five people happened. The accident then caused a fault in the device, which ensures the supply of oxygen.
