Britain supplies Ukraine with light defense systems due to a possible threat from Russia. British Defense Minister Ben Wallace said on Monday that the weapons did not pose a danger to Russia, but could help Ukraine in self-defense.
According to Western estimates, there are now up to 100,000 Russian soldiers at the border with Ukraine, and according to Western and Ukrainian correspondents, the Russian invasion of the neighboring country could begin in the first months of this year. Moscow denies such intentions.
On the contrary, it demands from the North Atlantic Alliance, which it feels threatened, that Ukraine will never become a member. NATO refuses to commit to such a thing, saying that each country has the right to decide on its allies on its own and without external pressure.
Last week, diplomats from both sides managed to resolve the tense situation at several meetings, but they did not lead to anything concrete. According to Reuters, Wallace said on Monday that it would invite its Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu to visit London in the next few weeks.
The German Foreign Ministry Annalena Baerbocková also discussed the situation in Eastern Europe today in Kiev, which called for a peaceful solution to the dispute with Russia. But she also said that a possible aggression against Ukraine would cost Moscow dearly. Baerbock is heading to Moscow on Tuesday to meet with Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov.
