Super League: FC Zürich beats FC St. Gallen 1-0 outnumbered
1/13
Marc Hornschuh’s (2nd from right) header …
Carlo Emanuele Frezza and Yannick Peng
The game
For more than 70 minutes, the FCZ operates with one man less on the field. Referee Piccolo flashes a straight red in the 17th minute after watching Krasniqi’s open-sole intervention against Guillemenot on video.
Coach Henriksen sacrifices striker Simic and brings Hornschuh for the defensive. And it is precisely this horn shoe that played a large part in FCZ’s late Lucky Punch. His header in the 88th minute steers Guillemenot into his own goal.
The master’s victory is by no means stolen. Despite being outnumbered, the home team creates several top-class chances. Goalkeeper Zigi parries brilliantly twice – against Okita (26th) and Tosin (63rd). Guerrero’s shot whizzes just a few centimeters wide of the post (65′).
And St Gallen? The aspens, who seem unimaginative, do little offensively when outnumbered. Guillemenot missed the best opportunity for the East Swiss in the 28th minute, when he shot the FCZ keeper in the middle alone in front of Brecher (healed quickly after an inner ligament injury on his knee).
In the final phase, referee Piccolo comes into focus again. He awards a penalty kick to one of the guests, but revises this decision after consulting the video images.
The gate
88. Jérémy Guillemenot (own goal) 1-0 | Hornschuh climbs up after a corner and heads the goal. Zigi would be there, but Guillemenot forestalls him and maneuvers the ball into the Espen net with his unsuccessful save.
The table
The FCZ is rid of the Red Lantern. The ninth-placed champion now greets them with 16 points from 18 games. At the bottom is now Winterthur, also with 16 points (goal difference -22 versus -13). However, the climber has only completed 17 games. The game Winterthur – Servette will be rescheduled on February 8th.
The best
cigarette The goalie from St. Gallen saved his team several times from the Zurich lead. The eastern Swiss play in excess for over an hour. With Guillemenot’s own goal, there’s nothing left for him to save.
The worst
Alves. The attacking midfielder from St. Gallen attracts more attention with dirty fouls than with fine passes, for which he would actually be responsible in his position. Coach Zeidler has seen enough after 45 minutes.
The notes
That was something to talk about
The guest sector remains mostly empty for almost forty minutes. The reason for this is an SBB catenary fault in Spreitenbach. FC St. Gallen fans have to wait a good hour in the extra train before they are taken to the Zurich stadium by another train and finally by bus. At the beginning of the second half they ignite a pyro fire spectacle and thus officially register in the Letzigrund.
Here’s how to proceed
St. Gallen expects the 19th Super League round Servette (8.30 p.m.) next Saturday. FC Zurich will visit Valais near Sion in seven days (2:15 p.m.).
