Toulouse-Lautrec: extraordinary students – Le Journal du weekend
It’s a classic French class, but there are only seven students. The majority have a disability. The rule in this establishment is to help each other. At Toulouse-Lautrec, both levels of students have a motor or mental disability. Everything is first thought for them. In the past, many of these children suffered from teasing. This school is like their second chance. On site, an infirmary welcomes students all day for treatment or rehabilitation. A small hospital that allows its severely disabled students to pursue an almost normal education. “We welcome students that we would not welcome anywhere else for some. First, it would be in the hospital or at home or no schooling possible. So that requires extremely specialized skills”, explains Catherine Munsch, nurse . Pupils’ schedules are adjusted. Augustin takes advantage of these moments of break to strengthen his legs, which have become fragile after an operation. If he were breastfeeding in a normal school, his rehabilitation would be very slow. A team that cares so that these children succeed, like the others. “We always manage to move forward, not necessarily at the same pace as the traditional structures. But we manage to move forward. We still have 100% success in the Bac. That means that it works”, indicates Mariem Dhaoui, deputy headmaster. And it also works even on the track. In the end, it’s all together that they win.
