Immediately after arriving in Prague, we reviewed the building styles, all of which we have already learned about are represented at Prague Castle. we visited the Romanesque basilica of St. Jiří, we visited the Gothic Vladislav Hall. We were also shown the window from which aldermen Slavata and Martinic and the scribe Fabricius were thrown out during the so-called Second Prague Defenestration on 23/05/1618. Another building style was the Renaissance, we got to know it best at the Schwarzenberg Palace, where the National Gallery of the Czech Republic is located. We discovered Baroque in the sculptures not only on the Charles Bridge, but also in the chapel of St. John of Nepomuck and St. Ludmila in the Basilica of St. George. We were also enchanted by the construction of the Castle, which was created by architect Josip Plečnik. we also visited the famous Zlatá ulička and the Daliborka tower.
After that, we went to explore the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic. Our guide explained its function to us. After watching a short film about the legislation in our country, we went inside the Chamber of Deputies. We saw the space for press conferences, individual MP clubs, MPs’ offices and finally we went to the meeting hall. We were surprised by its size. It was rather smaller than we expected. But all 200 MPs and the government can fit there. As it was Monday, there was no meeting. We were able to look at the parliamentary desks and voting machines in peace. We were convinced how uncomfortable the seats are at the visitors’ gallery, where we were able to try them out.
We are glad we could see everything in one day. Thanks to this, we were able to compare the concepts of absolute monarchy, constitutional monarchy, republic, parliamentary system, presidential republic, democracy and totalitarianism.
