Russia will replace imports of routers. Through the production of high-speed routers with Wi-Fi 6
|
By the end of 2024, mass production of routers with Wi-Fi 6 support will begin in Russia. This is a high-speed standard – up to 11 Gbps over the air. In Russia, routers with Wi-Fi 5 are now the most common (6.77 Gb / s at the peak). At this point in Russia, you only get routers that support 2.4 GHz, while Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 operate at 5 GHz.
Patriotic quarters
In Russia, there will be a domestic production of routers with support for Wi-Fi 6, also known as Wi-Fi 802.11ax. The production process should start working no later than 2024, but maybe during 2023.
The project to launch the production of high-tech modern routes in Russia is described in detail in the New Industrial Software (NIPO) roadmap. The document was recorded in December 2022.
Responsible for reviewing the project of the Ministry of Digital Development of Russia.
Wi-Fi 6 is quite modern, but still, as of January 2023, it is not the most advanced wireless networking standard. There is also Wi-Fi 6E, which uses a 6 GHz detection frequency. He appeared at the beginning of 2021, but until the end of 2022 was forbidden to play in Russia. Also the world costs on the verge of an increase in the Wi-Fi 7 standard, which promises gigabit data transfer rates without wires.
In the near future, such devices will be produced at Russian factories.
By comparison, the theoretical combined performance ceiling for Wi-Fi 6 requires up to 11 Gbps. Wi-Fi 7 has 46 Gbps. Wi-Fi 6E has speeds similar to Wi-Fi 6, but has access to the 6 GHz band. The most common now Wi-Fi 5 gives out, at best, 6.77 Gb / s.
There is a plan, it’s up to the implementation
According to Izvestia, truly mass production in Russia began by 2025. By this time, at least 500 thousand such devices should be assembled. There is no target conference – as an example of buyers as objects of industry, and ordinary consumers.
The preliminary list of potential clients includes providers Rostelecom and ER-telecom. In both cases, wired home or office Internet connection services are available, as well as built-in options in the form of installation and a branded router.
According to information about the release, only for the release of computers in Russia, and in some cases, everything is not limited to target indicators of production. Those responsible for such an important event must also establish a process for supplying consumers with the necessary components for assembling. The NIPO roadmap also prescribes various restrictions on the sale of finished products.
A start
From a technical point of view, organizing the production of Wi-Fi 6 routers in Russia should not be a big danger. According to the interlocutors of the publication, currently there are conveyors for assembling routers in the country.
The whole subtlety here is that this assembly is based on the imported component base of the volume. But it is not yet clear what “stuffing” of routers is referred to in the NIPO document. It is likely that their electronics will be domestic.

Import substitution
Plus, the production of routers is expected in Russia as of January 2023. Models with Wi-Fi 6 support are not produced. Mobile models that support 2.4 GHz are mainly assembled.
In this framework, macros have been working since at least the 21st century. It also uses wireless mice and Bluetooth devices, which causes signal transmission and reception quality problems, especially in apartment buildings and high-rise office centers.
Modern routers have long been provided with a rotation frequency of 5 GHz, due to which the problem of interference is almost leveled, as well as a high data transfer rate. Devices that are not capable of working in it can be considered morally tough.
Representatives of the Ministry of Digital Development told CNews that Russian manufacturers currently have prototypes of Wi-Fi 6 routers in their hands, both consumer and corporate. “The equipment is undergoing the final stages of testing: production is scheduled for the ΙΙ quarter of 2023,” the ministry said.
Difficulties can not be avoided
There is no information yet, which brand logos will be applied to Wi-Fi 6 routers, which will be produced in Russia. There are three options here – these will be either domestic brands, unknown characteristics of the masses of consumers, or foreign ones, to sets that have all been purchased a long time ago. The third is branded routers for providers, but they are unlikely to avoid the entire volume of products.
The number of Russian companies using cloud infrastructure has tripled
Digitalization
In any of the three options, with a very high degree of probability, there was a conflict with the sale of the original publication. Currently, most users have already switched to them. New routers are bought, as a rule, to replace failed ones.
One of the marketing options is modern new buildings, which are often found in apartments with a network opinion. Another option is to use those who want to try out the capabilities of the Wi-Fi 6 standard. But now nothing prevents them from switching to the more modern and high-speed Wi-Fi 6E standard. The opinions of experts surveyed believe that it would also not hurt to include it in the NIPO roadmap. However, it has not yet been mentioned there.
The third option is government representation, enterprise and organization with the goal of moving to Wi-Fi 6 with fewer modern and faster Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) devices and darker Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n).
