“With ARD and ZDF you sit in the front row,” it said in the advertisement at the time. About 30 years later, in the age of pay TV and Internet streaming, this no longer necessarily applies to public television. And even at youth football tournaments in the halls of the Hanover region, this slogan has long since lost its justification. Because there you STAND in the first row. Children anyway (“the little ones forward”), but meanwhile mummy, daddy, grandma and grandpa also love to follow the kicking offspring upright. The inevitable result is that the spectators sitting behind them in the stands are unable to see them. Which is why these usually rise up – and in the end they all stand.
One fine weekend, when I was sitting on a sports hall grandstand at a tournament in which my son and his team were taking part, I looked straight at the advertising slogan of a glazing company on the (of course standing) back of the training jacket in front of me. Unfortunately said strong back was not transparent. I had to yell to see past him and just saw the striker from my son’s team put the ball in to make it 2-0. The Glaser advertising man – whose son obviously played for the opposing team – flopped down in his seat annoyed. I suddenly had a wonderfully clear view of the field.
Go then. After the second (goal conceded) you just look better.
