Brussels also wants to get rid of pesticides in private spaces (Brussels)
Since 2019, pesticides are no longer used in the Brussels Region for the maintenance of regional and municipal public spaces. Its use is also prohibited in the buffer zones around watercourses and bodies of water. Environment Minister Alain Maron will now also encourage managers of private spaces to change their activities in order to protect the health of Brussels residents and our environment.
Last Thursday, the Brussels government approved the Brussels Plan for Pesticide Reduction 2023-2027, Maron announced on Tuesday.
The plan aims to reduce the use of pesticides on regional supervision “to protect our health and that of our environment”. The sale of a product may be allowed under the representation of the federal government.
Vulnerable
“The use of pesticides reduces ten benefits of more environmentally friendly methods is essential to improve the health of the inhabitants of Brussels, in particular of the most vulnerable, such as children on sports grounds of people who live near sprayed plots,” says the Ecolo- minister.
There will be pedagogical kits and training courses that provide answers to questions such as: How do you garden differently? What are the lowest alternatives? Which plants are best to use? What can you do with your pesticide supplies?
Advices
In addition, Brussels Environment will put future advice and video tutorials online for professionals and individuals. The Nature Facilitator will guide managers of private spaces (sports grounds, co-ownerships, office buildings…) in their efforts to design and maintain their outdoor spaces in a mobile way.
In order to combat the various pollutants in our environment caused by pesticides more effectively, the system for monitoring environmental risks (water, air, soil, agricultural production) is being strengthened.
