the Sib printing works threatened by the end of paper advertising leaflets
The planned end of the paper advertising catalogs of large retailers could have serious economic consequences on printing works, in particular at Sib in Pas-de-Calais.
Does the zero-prospectus sign the end of printing presses? This is what the Sib, the Boulonnais printing company, fears. Located in Saint-Léonard in Pas-de-Calais, it is one of the three largest printing works in the region.
Already in great difficulty with the rise in energy prices, which forced the company to produce only four days a week, the increase in the cost of paper was a second mass blow. “We have moved to an annual bill [d’électricité] from 600,000 to 700,000 euros to more than 4 million euros today”, reports the director of the printing works, Marc Leroy.
Today, it is the gradual end of paper advertising leaflets in mass distribution that threatens the Sib. Early December, aftersign Corathe group Leclerc announced the end of the distribution of its prospectuses from September 2023. A new hard blow for the Sib which corresponds to a loss of 10% of turnover of the printing press.
“The printed prospectus represents approximately the work of 70,000 employees in France”, specifies Marc Leroy, who himself employs 170 people in his company. “Maybe we can do without 70,000 jobs if we have a plan to take care of all these people and find them another job.”
“Today, suddenly leaving this sector and deciding to stop the prospectus without even seeing possibilities of reclassification for all of the 70,000 employees, I think it is not entirely reasonable”, denounces the CEO of the Bb.
The Auchan and Super U groups are also considering stopping print advertising and are currently conducting tests to assess the consequences of such a decision.
