The Moldovan police are often criticized for the methods of ambushing with radars or for other aspects of their work, but when it comes to really serious situations in traffic, with the pursuit of dangerous fugitives, there are often criticisms that the Moldovan policemen are too soft and . too kind to those who need to immobilize as quickly as possible and must stop. Indeed, in recent months we have all learned about cases when the police did not manage to catch the fugitive at once and only later identified him. Some pursuits end relatively quickly, when several police cars manage to block the fugitive, then the pursued is already calm and cooperative. Other times, however, as in the situation last night, the fugitive seems to have no limits in his behavior towards the police. Namely, comments often appeared here that the policemen from Moldova are too slow in their action in relation to such obvious dangers, if the situation had happened in another country, there would be no room for further long discussions.
Well, the police reported about a pursuit more intense than many others, which they carried out yesterday night, around 02:00, on the Ialoveni-Costești route. The police noticed a Nissan offroader driving on irregular paths and summoned the driver to stop. He sped off immediately after that, trying to run away from the police. The police team started the pursuit, but also requested the help of the policemen from Ialoveni to be able to catch him faster and more efficiently. After minutes of chasing, the police cars blocked the fugitive’s Nissan, but he continued to try to run away from the situation in which he had been surrounded, and also injured a police car.
This was the moment when the police resorted to what they could and should do in such a case. They summoned him with the weapon provided, first firing 3 shots into the air for prevention. Then they resorted to shooting the tires of the car. And finally, a policeman decided to break the side window of the car, which was fogged and did not offer visibility, to hasten the immobilization.
We don’t know who this police officer is, but we do know that he put his life at risk because there is no certainty of what might be behind the window, if any of the suspects were armed. We say that this young policeman deserves at least a mention from his superiors and the public, but also all his other colleagues who participate in this operation. It was one of the few clear moments, when the Moldovan police did not stand helpless in front of a really serious situation and acted promptly, even resorting to the destruction of the property of the person in question, who refuses to comply. And even after this moment, the policemen still did not forcibly pull the people out of the car, but ordered them to get out of there on their own.
The police discovered that a 33-year-old driver from Mileştii Mici and 3 passengers were in the car. The driver was breathalyzed and had 1.59 mg/L in breath. As a result, the driver was detained for 72 hours and charged with two charges from the criminal code of the Republic of Moldova — driving while in a state of advanced intoxication and article 349, paragraph 1, which stipulates the threat or violence of a committed against persons in office . public and/or goods used in the service. If the first criminal article is punishable by community service, the second one may result in a fine of up to 67,500 lei, 180 hours of community service or even imprisonment for up to 2 years.
