How Prague is changing – public spaces
Whether I feel good in a city is fundamentally related to the quality of its public space. We perceive and evaluate the city and life in it primarily according to the character of streets, squares, parks, waterfronts and other publicly accessible spaces. That is why they are also key themes of the Prague Metropolitan Plan for public spaces. The plan focuses on their protection and development or defines new ones in locations that are still emerging. At the same time, the metropolitan plan supports better walking through built-up areas and nicer city parks.
Victory Square
Viětné náměstí or Kulaťák does not function as a full-fledged square today. It is essentially an unfinished traffic intersection. The Victory Square is even four times larger than, for example, the Old Town Square. Therefore, the city decided that Vítězné náměstí will get a new face and become safer for pedestrians. The design of the Pavel Hnilička Architekti studio diverts all traffic away from the center of the square. A new pedestrian zone with a central monument will be created in the middle of the square. The place will be suitable, for example, for meetings, cultural events, markets, public gatherings or for a central monument. The proposal is based on the link of prof. Engel, the author of the urban design of Dejvice. It should be completed in 2025.
Wenceslas Square
The transformation of the current face of Wenceslas Square has been planned since 2005. The project, which has been suspended or postponed several times, was recently fundamentally supplemented by a new transport solution that will bring a tram line to the square, as was the case in the past. The Wenceslas Square revitalization project clearly defines individual areas for different types of transport. It expands the space for pedestrians, the plan is to establish a separate lane for cyclists and reduce the space for cars. The return of the trams will then help the tram network in the center. The project according to Atelier DUA and JAKUB CIGLER ARCHITEKTI is divided into two basic stages. The transformation of the lower part of the square began in 2020, the start of construction work in the upper part is estimated at the beginning of this year. Implementation and completion will then take one to two years. Wenceslas Square is one of Prague’s main squares, with an area of approximately 42,000 square meters it is the second largest in the city and in the Czech Republic.
Castle corso
A new two-kilometer route will be created in the center of Prague, which will lead from Národní to Prašná brána. According to the plans, it should be an interesting path suitable for walking, which will make people’s stay in the center more pleasant. The continuous area leading from the Legií bridge to the Štefánik bridge should become a new boulevard and shopping street. The study was developed by the Aoc studio. Revoluční ulice should be the first to start changing in about 2 years. “This is one of the busiest and also the most important cultural and social centers of Prague, however nowadays the space is oversaturated with unsightly advertising, mostly congested with automobile traffic both in motion and parked cars in the streets. The study offers a solution to all these problems, as well as reconstruction of surfaces, repair and addition of new furniture or placement of greenery.” says the deputy mayor for territorial development Petr Hlavácek.
Smetana embankment
Prague’s Smetanovo nábřeží is a historically very valuable space. In the future, it is to be an attractive public place with a pedestrian promenade with a view of Prague Castle. They argued about his future form for a long time. The first stage began recently with the planting of a row of seventeen Japanese jerlins. There was also space for restaurant gardens, new benches were installed and a paved cycle path was built, which was missing in this section of the European cycle route EV7. The first stage will be followed by the second and subsequently other interventions. The section from Mánes, past the Charles Bridge, through Křižovnické náměstí, then through Křižovnická street to Jan Palach náměstí should go through the modification. The second stage should be completed in 2024. The study improves conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport, nothing will change for car transport after the implementation of the works. Part of the revitalization is also the modification of the area of Křižovnické náměstí.

Prague’s Smetanovo nábřeží is a historically very valuable space. In the future, it is to be an attractive public place with a pedestrian promenade with a view of Prague Castle.
