Demography in Monaco: what trends?
Births, marriages, deaths… Here is how the population has evolved over the past five years.
As every year, the Town Hall of Monaco presents the Civil Status figures for the year published. The opportunity to observe the trends on this small territory of 2km²dense in population and whose healthcare facilities also attract residents of neighboring municipalities.
Drop in the number of births
In 2022, 862 babies uttered their first cry on Monegasque soil: 435 boys and 427 little girls. A falling number of births in the territory compared to last year (976 in 2021), and in general compared to previous years. The Principality recorded 983 births five years ago, in 2018, 939 in 2019, 911 in 2020.
As for the number of deaths, while it is relatively stable in 2018 (528), 2019 (524) and 2020 (535), 2021 is marked by an increase in mortality (603 deaths) which is explained by the health crisis . On the other hand, in 2022, victory has regained its former trend. The number of deaths that year is also identical to that of five years ago, or 528.
Finally, the population of the Principality of Monaco is only increasing. Whereas in the 1960s, 23,000 people had been assessed. It is 39,150 at the last reading of the IMSEE in 2021. With almost 20,000 inhabitants per square kilometer, it is the most densely populated country in the world.
The number of marriages is stable
The number of marriages has been relatively stable for five years. 191 were presented on the territory of the Principality in 2022. It was 181 in 2021, 174 in 2021, 202 in 2019 and finally 183 in 2018. No major variations, therefore, which is not the case for divorces which turn out to be less and less numerous.
58 divorces took place in 2022 and 2021, compared to 63 in 2020, 70 in 2019 and even 78 in 2018. We can therefore say that couples are stronger today than five years ago!
