Tips for Thursday, January 19
The story of one of the most famous love triangles is presented by Švand’s theater in Martin Crimp’s new retelling as one of the first theaters since its world premiere at London’s Playhouse Theatre. The award-winning British playwright’s adaptation retains all the motifs of Edmond Rostand’s original work, but strips them of the romantic ornamentation. He leaves Alexandrine and speaks to the contemporary audience with the passionate poetry of today and goes from rap, through free verse to linguistic minimalism… A captivating love story from 17th century Paris, in which love hides behind poetry, heroic deeds fit under the layer of raised words and under murmurs cafe philosophies are raging war conflict… Even those who have never read or seen Rostand’s drama are certainly familiar with the title story, in which the title suggests under a mask, through which the hero expresses his love, verse by verse, to the young Kristián to the beautiful Roxana. And Crimp, in his transcription, exposes the very power that those who rule the word have. The power to create a new form of reality, the power to manipulate. For him, the word is a tool that can ignite love, but also incite hatred.
