The air in the area of the Giurgiulesti International Port in the Republic of Moldova is polluted, after the massive fire
Specialists of the Environment Agency of the Republic of Moldova announce that the results of laboratory tests carried out on January 16, the day on which the fire occurred on the territory of the Giurgiulesti International Port, indicate an increased level of air pollution.

The employees of the Environment Agency claim that they took samples from different areas of Giurgiulesti Port on Monday. And found exceedances of both sanitary standards for nitrogen dioxide and phenol content.
“As a result of the intervention of the Environment Agency’s Environmental Reference Laboratory, at the fire that broke out at the Giurgiulești Free International Port, which took place on January 16, 2023, air samples were taken at different distances from the fire’s source. As a result of laboratory investigations, insignificant exceeding of sanitary standards for nitrogen dioxide by 1.2 times were identified. An increased level of air pollution was attested for the phenol content, which exceeded the sanitary norm from 2.2 to 3.8 times”, officials announce.
On Tuesday, they traveled again to the south of the neighboring country to take other samples that they will thoroughly analyze in the laboratory.
“The Environmental Agency continues to monitor the level of air pollution. On January 17, 2023, representatives of the Environmental Reference Laboratory made a repeated visit to the site to take samples and analyze the samples under working conditions. The Environment Agency announces that it will come with an updated information on this subject”, the employees specified.
The intervention from the port, difficult and lasting for the firefighters
On Monday morning, a tank with over 1000 tons of grain caught fire, after it collapsed on the territory of the Giurgiulesti International Port. The fire caused no casualties and required the intervention of six fire teams. After a few hours, they managed to put out the flames, but their mission continued for several hours at the site.
Meanwhile, representatives of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations are investigating the circumstances of this case, stating that they warned at the beginning of this month about the danger of a fire on the territory of the port, after two other tanks of this kind collapsed last fall.
