“save” the Museum of Fabrics in Lyon
Rudy Ricciotti’s project for the Museum of Fabrics.
After being challenged, the Region presented on Monday, January 16, the reduced modifications to its “revival of the Museum of Tissues” project.
The implementation of this project was chaotic. Work had started at the end of 2020 with the restoration of the Hôtel Lacroix-Laval. But it doesn’t stop there. In order to link the Hôtel Lacroix-Laval and the Hôtel Villeroy, the region imagined, in collaboration with the architect Rudy Ricciotti, a third building: the Hôtel Neuf.
That’s where the trouble begins. For the project to see the light of day, the local urban plan must be modified. Against all expectations, the authorization had been given by the Metropolis of Lyon but the public inquiry ends in a refusal. Black point in the plans of Laurent Wauquiez, the neighborhood. The investigating commissioners refused to validate this modification, “pointing out in particular the impact for the neighbors of the new constructions concerned, encouraging the Region to review its copy”.
New project, “better way to protect”
Laurent Wauquiez therefore presented his new copy in front of the procession of actors from the world of fabric, urban planning and conservation. Following a presentation on the importance of Lyon’s know-how in the field and the wealth that the museum can house. The president of the region finally detailed the modifications made to the initial project.
The big change is the height. The first reluctance of local residents to the initial project was that of the view which would have been obstructed by a building 20 meters high emerging from the ground. There, Laurent Wauquiez learned the lesson: “the southern outbuildings (on the rue des remparts d’Ainay side) were erected without exceeding the Villeroy hotel, one level was removed and the new hotel remained at 15.5 m.“
Rescue of the Museum of Fabrics
The budget initially announced by the Region for the “rescue” of the museum was between 50 and 60 million euros. Finally, the budget will be closer to 60. Laurent Wauquiez rails against the state: “it finances only 10% of the project, when it is necessary to support Paris it is not the same thing” by adding “culture is not only in Paris, it is also in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes!“

The president of the region also wanted to thank the residents of the Tissue Museum. “JI regret that the discussion was not made from the start“The latter still have time to reflect and discuss with each other before the start of the work. If the project is validated, the first deadline is scheduled for 2026 with the opening of the Hôtel Lacroix-Laval followed, in 2028 of the total opening of the site.
