Employment in LuxembourgProfessions shunned but “rich in opportunities”
LUXEMBOURG – A study carried out by Liser and Adem lists the trades in shortage that do not require a university degree.
Construction machinery mechanic, tile setter, carpenter… Some trades present a great imbalance between labor supply and demand. The study “Short occupations in Luxembourg: an analysis of occupations not requiring a university degree” thus identified eight groups of occupations mainly based in construction and industry.
“As they do not require a university degree, their image in society is not always positive”, advances Inès Baer, head of studies and statistics at Adem and one of the authors of the study carried out with the Read. “It’s unfortunate because they are rich in opportunities and can offer attractive salaries.”
Jobs that “will not disappear”
Some of these trades are not very automatable. “They will not be forced to disappear, explains Inès Baer. We see that jobs that cannot be automated are marked by a greater need for soft skills (adaptation to change, ability to work alone or in a team, etc.). Human skills are resilient to technological progress”.
Faced with the shortage, Adem offers continuing training for craftsmen’s assistants. They are not qualifying but, in two months, offer a gateway to the sector. Inès Baer believes that we need to inform young people more, including women who are not very present in these professions, and adults looking for a new professional project.
She urges employers to publish their offers because “we know that there are shortages in other sectors such as catering, but without enough data we cannot assess their degree”.
