The celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the death of Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci, known as Il Perugino, which took place in 1523, when he was around 73, began in 2023. Città della Pieve, the birthplace of the Divine painter, has organized one of the leading events at a national level: the exhibition «…at baptism Peter was called», curated by the scientific cultural committee composed of Vittoria Garibaldi, art historian, former superintendent of of Umbria and director of the National Gallery of Umbria, Francesco Federico Mancini professor of history of modern art at the University of Perugia, Antonio Natali, former director of the Uffizi Gallery and Nicoletta Baldini, art historian.
Two exhibition venues The exhibition, which will have two exhibition venues, Palazzo Della Corgna and the diocesan civic museum of Santa Maria dei Servi, will be inaugurated on Saturday 1 July and will last until 30 September 2023 and will develop around the iconographic focus of the main themes of Perugino’s works Città della Pieve: the Nativity, the Baptism, the Deposition from the Cross and the Lamentation over the dead Christ, which represent some of the most significant moments of his innovative and revolutionary artistic career. «After years of incessant work and intense planning – comments the municipal administration – the confirmation phase of the loans has been completed, which will bring about 30 works to Città della Pieve, in addition to those already owned by the city, by Perugino and contemporary painters at the Divine Umbrian and Tuscan painter, never brought together before, from museums and national and international cultural institutions, from Vienna, the Uffizi Gallery and the Vatican Museums. The life, art and some of the most important works of Pietro Vannucci will be at the center of this year’s Pievese calendar, with numerous initiatives that will accompany the public to retrace his footsteps, in the places where he was born, lived and was inspired to create its magnificent masterpieces, but also by participating in themed events, workshops and entertainment».
