Zurich Airport will double passenger numbers in 2022
In 2022, Zurich Airport more than increased the number of passengers compared to the previous year. A total of 22.6 million passengers flew through Switzerland’s largest airport last year, after 10.2 million passengers in 2021.
(Keystone-SDA) After a first quarter that was still marked by the corona pandemic, passenger volume recovered significantly over the course of the year, Zurich Airport announced on Thursday. The number of passengers in the first half of the year rose from 15,000 in some cases to as many as 90,000 on peak days. Compared to the pre-Corona year 2019, passenger numbers last year were 72 percent.
The number of flight movements was 216,584 in 2022, which corresponded to an increase of 63 percent. Compared to 2019, the number of flight movements was 79 percent. A total of 422,153 tonnes of freight were also handled, an increase of 7 percent over the previous year.
Strong plus in December
In December 2022 alone, 1.90 million passengers will fly through Zurich Airport. This corresponded to an increase of 80 percent compared to the same month last year. Compared to the value in December 2019, the number of passengers was 82 percent. The number of local passengers reached 1.29 million and the number of transfer passengers 0.61 million, corresponding to a share of 32 percent.
The number of flight movements in December rose by 26 percent compared to the previous year to a total of 17,581 take-offs or landings. Flight movements were around 87 percent of the 2019 level. The average number of passengers per flight was 126, up 34 percent on the previous year. Seat utilization rose 20 percentage points year-on-year to 77 percent.
A total of 34,087 tonnes of freight were also handled at Zurich Airport in December. This corresponded to a decrease of 9 percent compared to the same month last year. Compared to December 2019, 11 percent less freight was handled.
