The faculty of Lyon 1 denies the use of ChatGPT to cheat within its course
According to information from BFM Lyon, the Lyon university is no longer in contact with the professor who denounced the use of ChatGPT by students. The latter ensures that the cheating is real.
The cheating of some students during a homework in handicapology makes a lot of noise. If the use of ChatGPT to write their copy is well proven, the first information indicated that the facts would have been revealed within the University of Lyon 1. However, the faculty, which hosts a master’s degree in sensory and cognitive disabilities, denies these details.
No intervention since 2016
According to information from BFM Lyon, Stéphane Bonvallet, the professor who discovered the use of artificial intelligence ChatGPT by his students, is no longer part of the Lyon 1 faculty. He had however given a conference in 2016, but no other collaboration has not been held since. His vacant file was also deleted by the university in 2019. The other Lyon universities have confirmed that they have not used the services of the lecturer.
On his site, Stéphane Bonvallet made a point of clarifying his proposals. During the interviews granted, he claims to have never mentioned that the duty in question was part of a teaching within the Lyon 1 master’s degree. He indicates that he gives courses and conferences for “many clients, public and private”.
“I never gave the identity of my client and my students, nor even the educational content as well as the course mentioned, it was never an official test of a faculty or a training center” , he wrote.
Attentive to potential uses
The testimony of Stéphane Bonvallet is content to return to the use of ChatGPT to complete a homework assignment. For its part, the general management of the Lyon 1 faculty says it is closely monitoring the potential use of artificial intelligence, but has not yet had any feedback from cheating.
Questioned by Tech&Co, the Ministry of National Education ensures that it follows “beware of this question and the potential uses of this innovation”. According to a spokesperson, the use of ChatGPT is not relevant “neither to do one’s homework, nor to progress”.
If some teachers claim to be able to discern the writings of a student and artificial intelligence, the writing of Tech&Co tells you how to detect if a text has been written by ChatGPT.
