The 18th contingent of the National Army was deployed to the KFOR peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. It is about 41 soldiers who will contribute to maintaining peace in the region alongside comrades from 26 cooperating states.
The Moldovan military will be deployed in the Camp Villaggio Italia military base in the town of Pech, Kosovo.
“You have had very complicated training, you have shown professionalism, you have passed all the tests and you are fit for the mission. I am sure that this contingent will successfully accomplish this mission. The Republic of Moldova is becoming a contributor to world peace and security”, said the Minister of Defense, Anatolie Nosatâi, during a ceremony attended by the relatives of the deployed soldiers.
“Moldova’s contribution to peacekeeping and international security is of extraordinary importance on a global scale. Right on the border of Moldova, a horrible war of aggression is taking place. If hostilities were to resume in Kosovo or Lebanon, or in other regional areas, the risk of dominoes, respectively, of triggering a third world war, would be imminent”, said the Italian ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Lorenzo Tomassoni.
Since 2014, the Republic of Moldova has deployed contingents of National Army soldiers to the KFOR mission in Kosovo, as part of the Multinational Peacekeeping Force.
The KFOR peacekeeping mission is led by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in accordance with UN Resolution 1244.
