Tragic work accident with damaged building in the center of Athens – News.gr
The Athens Builders Union complains that not all safety measures had been taken
The Tragedy with the death of a builder of Albanian origin occurred today in a building located at the junction of Akadimia and Omir streets, with the Athens Builders’ Union reporting that, as the first information indicates, a piece of concrete fell on the unfortunate worker’s head.
In a statement of the Union, it is stated, among other things, that: “We express our deepest condolences and our support to the family, relatives and friends of our colleague Eltion Ghika, who lost his life today while going to the EHINOS building construction factory. , which will be converted into a hotel, on Omirou and Akadimia Streets in the center of Athens.
From the first moment we were informed, a delegation of the Union and our Federation was there, where the lack of security measures was found. The accident could have been avoided if the elevator fences were fully closed, since at this point the debris from the upper floors is thrown and ends up on the ground floor, while the funnel on the 8th floor reaches the 4th.
It is clear, as in most cases of fatal accidents, that safety measures are a cost to employers, it can even delay work, so they are not followed as it should be, while at the same time grueling hours are imposed, often 7 days work with, only aim to catch the schedules and deliver the project as quickly as possible. This is the result of the “development” boasted by the current and previous governments.
On the one hand profits for increased corporations and big contractors and on the other dead and broken workers, a working middle age, with imports squeezed down for 15 years. The opposite increases were taken with our own collective and organized struggle, with our own militant claim”.
