Between 4:30 p.m. and 5:17 p.m. this Wednesday, January 11, 2023, the inhabitants of Lyons who raised their heads to the sky were able to observe a free and particularly beautiful spectacle.
UN sunset bathed Lyon in orange and pink colors while a rare cloud phenomenon makes the scene a real painting. Explanations by meteorologist Romain Weber from Lyon Météo.
A cloud barrier aloft
On social networks, many have succeeded in the phenomenon and are asking questions. Why was the sky so beautiful this Wednesday, January 11?
From 4 p.m., “a before cloudy evacuated over France and the demarcation was very clear between the clear sky and the clouds. There was thus a cloud barrier and such a demarcation is quite rare in France “, explains Romain Weber.
This front of clouds chased by a front of cold, dry air aloft was several thousands of kilometers, starting from the south of France and going up to Sweden. “A very marked phenomenon over a large area,” notes the Lyon forecaster.
But if this phenomenon had taken place a few hours before, few Lyonnais would have noticed it. The pink-orange tint was due to just a sunset. The conditions met by chance caused a particularly rare and beautiful sight in Lyon and in the region.
