RTL Híradó – “I just came out for the first time, but not the last time” – fuel is cheaper in all neighboring countries than in Hungary, but the government does not plan to reduce VAT
The 27 percent VAT may be the main reason why fuel is much cheaper in neighboring countries than in Hungary, the general secretary of the Hungarian Mineral Oil Association told RTL Hírado. Live negative petrol tourism has started, which means that more and more people are refueling abroad next to the border. In Romania, you can save up to HUF 110-130 per liter, and not only on gasoline. The mayor of Kübekháza, on the border, does his bulk shopping there, saving up to HUF 30,000 a month. RTL Híradó contacted the government to find out if they plan to reduce the general sales tax on fuel, but they could not or did not want to answer the question.
The first gas station in Croatia is located after the Dravaszabolcs border crossing, 12 kilometers from Harkány and 17 kilometers from Siklós. There are more and more cars with Hungarian license plates here.
If someone lives in the immediate vicinity of the border and starts with an empty tank, or with a completely empty tank and fills it up, they can achieve savings of HUF 5-6 thousand
said a Hungarian gas station attendant.
This is not a coincidence, because at the gas station in Ominous Croatia – calculated with HUF 400 euros – 95 gasoline is HUF 118 per liter and diesel is HUF 122 cheaper than in Hungary.
It is also worth going to Romania
In Hungary’s eastern neighbor, you can save HUF 100 on gasoline and HUF 110 on diesel per liter by refueling there.
It is well worth going through Gyula
– said a Hungarian speaker to Hírado.
I just came out for the first time, but not the last
another revealed.
Many people also cross from Kübekháza to Romania to refuel and even go shopping, said the mayor of the border settlement.
As mayor, I can only add that our municipality will also refuel from there starting next week. We will refuel in Romania. We have a community tax number, we will fill up our cars there
Mayor Róbert Molnár said.
The head of the settlement also told RTL Hírado that they have to get the money wherever possible, for example they can’t save on public lighting, they can’t turn off the lights, because if an accident happens, the municipality will immediately hold them responsible.
Wages are catastrophic, and prices beat Western European levels. I don’t know where we got it so wrong
– said the mayor, who also revealed that he has been doing his shopping in neighboring Romania for quite some time and also goes there to refuel, so he can save HUF 20-30,000 for the family coffers every month.
You can watch a longer interview with the mayor in the video below.
A full tank is cheaper than all our neighbors
In Slovakia, gasoline 95 is HUF 50 cheaper, diesel HUF six. All neighboring Austria is also cheaper. According to the general secretary of the Hungarian Mineral Oil Association, the prices are not high in Hungary because gas stations want to compensate for their losses due to the price cap. Ottó Grád mainly blames the extra high sales tax, which is the highest in the European Union.
Unfortunately, the purchase price in Hungary is subject to a VAT of 27 percent, and looking at neighboring countries – even in the case of countries with higher excise taxes – at this price level, the VAT difference is already so valuable that fuel is therefore more expensive in Hungary than in neighboring countries
Ottó Grád told Hírado.
The staff of RTL Híradó asked the government whether they are planning on this road, whether it is expected that they will reduce the VAT charged on fuel, but they will not answer until the broadcast. According to holtankoljak.net, prices are expected to drop at gas stations on Wednesday. Gasoline can be HUF 12 cheaper per liter and diesel by HUF 10.
