National quidditch tournament for the first time in Siena
On 28 and 29 January 2022 the final phase of the Italian quidditch season will take place at the Uopini sports field, with the playoffs (Saturday 28 January) and the Euro-qualifier (Sunday 29 January).
This is the first official tournament (organized by the Italian Quidditch Association), which will take place in the land of Siena, where the local Siena Ghibellines team has been active for almost eight years: just in recent months, the Sienese team has finally decided to step of the establishment of an Amateur Sports Association, thus being able to present a formal candidacy to host one of the main events of the 2022/23 Quidditch League at home: the Sienese candidacy was successful and, for the first time, the black and whites will finally be able to play in a tournament within friendly walls.
The event is open to the public and foresees the participation of the teams that qualified during the Season starter, held in Treviso last November: the Ghibellines, by virtue of the second place obtained in their group, directly snatched access to the Euro -qualifier on Sunday 29 January, together with the teams from Bologna, Modena and Brindisi.
However, as mentioned, the tournament will be divided into two days full of matches; In fact, on Saturday 28 January, the teams from Brescia, Verona, Mantua, Milan and Perugia will face each other in the playoffs: only two of these will be able to access the next phase, joining the four teams mentioned above to compete for a place in next season’s European competitions .
Thanks to the excellent results achieved by the Italian teams last year (Modena managed to win a historic silver medal in Division 1 of the European Quidditch Cup, held in Ireland in June 2022), this year there will be no less than four places available in Europe for the teams from our peninsula: the names of those who will be able to access Division 1 and Division 2 of the European Quidditch Cup 2023 will therefore emerge from the decisive “two days” in Siena. Therefore, a weekend at the end of January full of sport and emotions is expected at the Uopini sports field.
