Arci Siena and Comune di Buonconvento together for democratic legality

Sugar Mizzy February 2, 2023

Promote education in legality and social justice with active participation initiatives aimed at schools and the whole community. This is the primary objective of the memorandum of understanding signed today, Thursday 2 February by Arci Siena APS with the Municipality of Buonconvento, carrying forward the positive experiences already started in recent years with other Municipalities in the province of Siena. The document was signed by Riccardo Conti, mayor of Buonconvento, and Serenella Pallecchi, president of Arci Siena APS.

The project will kick off in February with meetings and workshops that will involve male and female students in the two third grades of the lower secondary school of the Istituto Comprensivo “Insieme” in the Buonconvento school complex.

The initiative will end in April with a double appointment: a visit to Suvignano by the classes involved in the project, to get to know the property confiscated from the mafia and its valorisation up close, and a meeting with Alessandro Gallo, actor, theater director and author of the book “It was your father” who will bring his experience in the field of democratic legality into the classrooms of the Istituto Comprensivo “Insieme” and into a public initiative open to all those who wish to participate.

The protocol signed today provides for the promotion of the culture of legality and social justice, with particular attention to the younger generations, focusing on issues such as the fight against mafia infiltration, the formation of a culture of democratic legality and care for the commons, the active participation of citizens of all ages in the experiences of social anti-mafia, the diffusion of knowledge of the legislation on confiscation and the promotion of the social re-use of assets confiscated from the mafias starting from the good practices present in the territory.

“The protocol signed with Arci Siena APS, which we thank for the opportunity offered to us – underlines Riccardo Conti, mayor of Buonconvento – is the result of the will of our municipal administration to grow the community represented, and above all the younger generations, in the awareness of how important it is to spread the culture of democratic legality, as well as the themes of social anti-mafia. When we talk about the mafia we never think that our reality is affected by these phenomena, but we are wrong. The Suvignano project is clear evidence of how important it is to promote all the initiatives covered by this protocol. The fight against mafia infiltration must start from the training of young people”.

“Democratic legality, active citizenship and participation – adds Serenella Pallecchi, president of Arci Siena APS – are fundamental issues for Arci and at the center of numerous initiatives that we have been carrying out for some years in the province of Siena together with some municipal administrations. The protocol signed today with the Municipality of Buonconvento reinforces all of this with activities aimed, in particular, at young people but also at the whole community through school and extracurricular courses aimed at increasing attention and awareness on these issues. I thank the municipal administration of Buonconvento for its sensitivity and collaboration, with the hope that projects like these can continue to spread in our
