Critical ‘migration’ mission to Turkey – News Milliyet
SEZER ÖNSAL Ankara – This year, Turkey assumed the term presidency of the International Center for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), which is currently a member of 19 states and has an authorized status in the UN. War Ünlü, Head of the Ministry of Migration Management, attended the ICMPD 79th Executive Board Meeting held in Vienna in December 2022 on behalf of Turkey. With the decision taken at the meeting, Turkey took over the ICMPD Executive Board Term Presidency from Germany. Turkey will hand over the term presidency, which it will carry out for one year, to Greece at the end of this period, with the aim of “eliminating the source for permanent solutions”.
Answering Milliyet’s questions, Tamer Kılıç, ICMPD Turkey and Western Balkans Regional Coordinator, commented on the policy provisions of the countries holding the term presidency according to their own characteristics and the view of Turkey’s term “resource consumption conservation for permanent solutions”, stating that these ownerships of ICPDM reduce that management. “The theme of the presidency shows its strategy in itself. Permanent solutions that cause irregular migration will be Turkey’s priority. Searching for a solution throughout the country, stopping the migration or providing the conditions for the backward targets to stay inside, making a contribution to the solution with an operation to be carried out from wherever the migration comes to Turkey. As ICMPD, we also have an annual operation with the Directorate of Migration Management, but the presidency of the term presidency will be a year in which everything will be handled more comprehensively.”
