Scheinherr (Prague itself): Jan Želivský Street will undergo a major reconstruction, Žižkov will get modern utility networks
06.01.2023 13:21 | Press Release
Jan Želivského Street in Žižkov and its surroundings are awaiting a major reconstruction of the sewage network, water supply line and gas pipeline, which will require significant traffic restrictions throughout the year.
The first stage of the works will begin on January 14 and last until February 20, detours will go through Olšanská, Prokopova, Rokycanova and Koněvova streets. Some parts of the local water system are more than years old and accidents occur frequently. The event’s investor is the Prague Water Company.
One of the busiest traffic arteries in the whole of Žižkov will always be closed in only one direction. According to the plans, the direction from Basilejské náměstí to Ohrad will be limited from January 14 to June, and then the opposite direction from July to December. As the exact condition of the sewer network is unknown due to its considerable age, a more detailed timetable will be published once it is uncovered later in the year.
This important construction event was discussed for more than a year with all the authorities concerned, including the city districts. The construction is divided into 12 partial sub-stages so that the impacts on the area are minimized with detail on the maximum possible traffic service of the given area, which will be significantly limited throughout the year 2023. These are very extensive traffic engineering measures with an impact on four city districts – Prague 2, Prague 3, Prague 9 and Prague 10.

The closures were preceded by careful coordination. “34,000 vehicles pass through Jan Želivského Street every day, which is why we started preparing and discussing detour routes with the affected city districts and other entities more than a year ago. Traffic measures as part of the entire event will be extensive and will require the modification of a number of light-controlled intersections both as part of the closure itself and as a result of detour routes. The repair of water pipes and sewers, which due to their age caused frequent accidents and sudden closures in Prague 3, is also important with regard to future construction in the Žižkov Freight Station location,” says Adam Scheinherr, Deputy Mayor for Transport.

The reconstruction of sewerage and water pipes is now urgent. Frequent accidents with the eastern aqueduct occur in places on both sides between Ohráda and Jeseniová street and Basilejské náměstí, the fault lies in the age of this infrastructure, the western part of the aqueduct dates from 1927 and 1905.
It is necessary above all to increase the capacity of the sewage system and move it underground so that it is located outside the tram line. Furthermore, the ovoid sewer under the tram line will be rehabilitated, especially in the vicinity of the Biskupcova tram stop and its immediate surroundings. Both gas pipelines will also be reconstructed on the eastern side.
As part of the works, the reconstruction of the DN 800 water supply line in the Ohrada – Olšanská section, which connects the Flora and Mazanka reservoirs, is also being carried out. There are also frequent accidents here, there were three last year alone, mainly due to the overall leakage due to damage caused by stray currents from the tram line. This water main is from 1957.
The reconstruction of key engineering networks also offers the possibility of reconstructing the entire Jan Želivský street and the tram line from the point of view of urban planning and architectural concepts.
