reusable tableware “in tune with the times” at McDonald’s

While the anti-waste law came into force on January 1, 2023 in fast food, McDonald’s brands have adapted to “the spirit of the times“.
As of January 1, 2023, all fast food chains welcoming more than 20 people on site are required to present reusable tableware and no longer disposable packaging, due to the 2020 anti-waste law. In Lyon, fast food McDonald’s foods comply with the law.
“Changing our work habits”
Asked by Lyon CapitalChristophe Chapuis, manager of 10 McDonald’s franchises in the Lyon metropolitan area, including Bellecour, Opéra, Lyon-Charcot, and even Vaise, focuses on the question of the brand’s carbon footprint: “this law, which forces us to rethink our carbon footprint, is totally in tune with the times. Given our notoriety, we must have been good students“.
Less packaging and less waste. This new consumption requires “change our work habits“, even though”we have already done this in the past with the removal of plastic straws, lids and toys“, continues the manager.
Up to 1,500 dishes at McDonald’s
In total, each of Christophe Chapuis’ eight out of 10 brands is equipped with approximately 1,000 to 1,500 dishes, including cups, chip holders and cutlery. If today some brands are not yet equipped, it is because they have to adapt their interior. “In Bellecour, we have problems with washing up and space to fit out dishwashers“, specifies the franchisee.
It can also happen that some tables are equipped with new cups, due to forgetfulness or carelessness. “The national authorities leave us a margin of adaptation and know that it requires a reconfiguration of our spaces“, says Christophe Chapuis.
Barely imposed, already stolen
McDonald’s reusable tableware, like that of other brands, like Burger King, is all the rage. Immediately produced, already flown. The novelty and “collector” effect attract consumers.
“I should have taken a bag to steal the cups” or even ” çthat’s good, I needed an ashtray” are released in the aisles of McDonald’s Opera in Lyon. To respond to this craze, some restaurants believe that their dishes are geolocated, like a manager of the franchise in Belfort. Even if in reality the chips NFC is only used to know the stock of crockery in real time, the manager of Belfort has pasted a poster warning that the containers are equipped with a geolocation chip.
Little worried about the loss of dishes, Christophe Chapuis does not intend to act as a deterrent. “We rely on people’s good citizenship. Once everyone has their McDonald’s collector dishes at home, there will be fewer thefts“, estimates Christophe Chapuis, while counting on the vigilance of the employees.
