“Motivation to grow lettuce in the Netherlands is not as great as it used to be”
Tholen – Although Henk van Doorne is no longer as active in the lettuce trade as in the past, he cannot completely let go of the trade yet. “Call it handyman services. I don’t have to work as hard as I used to, but by buying and selling some lettuce I stay involved. The lettuce is the apple of my eye,” says the Westlander affectionately.
“At the moment, the poly lettuce is reasonably paid. The supply is not too large, but the demand is not sky-high either. The price level of the poly lettuce varies between 18 and 33 cents. The price for the jumbo lettuce is currently around 60-70 cents,” says Henk. “We didn’t have a good time. Due to the rare autumn temperatures with a lot of moisture, the quality of the lettuce was quite mediocre for a long time.”
Moreover, according to Henk, the motivation to grow lettuce is not as great as it used to be. “People are increasingly opting for convenience vegetables in a bag. Moreover, the interim growers are reserved. It is an uncertain time due to the energy market. Just find people who want to come and cut lettuce at your place.”
