A sad sight: the streets of Budapest are full of discarded Christmas trees – photos, video
Came epiphany day when we take down the Christmas decorations as usual. The trees with earthen balls can be planted outside in the garden, since it is not too cold, but what should the city dweller do with the former Christmas tree stripped of its festive decorations and shedding its needles?
Here is a small gallery of how the former decorations of the holiday covered the streets of Budapest at Epiphany:
We have summarized in a short video what kind of sight unfolds before us in Budapest at Epiphany:
Residents can choose from several options: they can display the trees next to the bins or at one of the designated collection points. In the first case, however, care must be taken not to obstruct pedestrians, parking on the road, or car traffic – warns the FKF, which is responsible for the cleanliness of the capital.
But where does the habit of saying goodbye to the Christmas tree so soon come from?
The origin of the Christmas tree arrangement dates back to the 16th century. According to records, the history of the decoration of the pine tree to Márton Luther is connected, who noticed a starlight shining on a pine tree on the way home. I presented the beautiful sight to the family members by placing candles on a tree.
The custom of tearing down the Christmas tree dates back to the Victorian era. Previously, the decorations were kept until the day of Our Lady of Candlemas, the second of February. From the middle of the 19th century, it was already common that if the decorations are still up on the night of Epiphany, they must remain that way throughout the year. And if we cut down the tree earlier, it brings bad luck.
When do the pine tree flights start?
The pine tree can be taken to one of the more than 250 designated collection points in Budapest. That’s when you need it “pine aisles” deliver the Christmas trees. On the website of the FKF you can find it here with a mapin which district, where and when these flights depart!
Before and after that the waste transport machines collect the evergreens.
