This year, as every year, approximately 300,000 Christmas trees will be disposed of in Prague
Prague services and other collection companies claim that this year, like every year, they will dispose of around 300,000 Christmas trees in the metropolis. People should put them next to publicly accessible dustbins or containers for sorted waste, from where the company will move them to transfer stations and then to composting plants. Under no circumstances should people throw saplings directly into dustbins. ČTK was informed by the spokesman of the Prague services, Radim Mana.
According to the spokesperson, people should also not leave saplings near trash cans in courtyards, in locked cages, or near trash cans in family homes. “Trees should definitely not end up next to such containers, not even when the dustbin is placed in front of the object for regular collection. The correct place for a retired tree in these cases is a separation station with colored containers,” said Mana.
He added that the trees left by the dustbins can be taken by the current strong wind, and the Prague services therefore advise people to wait until Sunday, when the meteorological warning is supposed to pass, to dispose of them. Most people traditionally throw out trees on Three Kings Day, i.e. on Friday.
The collection of trees will be handled by smaller flatbed trucks and larger specially designated garbage trucks. The conifers will be taken to the transshipment point in Průmyslová, Proboštská and Puchmajerova streets, and from there they will go to compost plants, where they will be used to make wood chips and compost.
Part of the pollution or insufficiently trimmed trees may end up in the incinerator in Malešice, added Mana. People should take artificial trees that have reached the end of their life to collection yards, they do not belong in the container for mixed or sorted waste.
PSAS, which ensures the collection and processing of waste for roughly two-thirds of the metropolis. Since 2018, Prague has been the sole owner of the company, when it displaced a small shareholder using the so-called squeeze-out. The rest of waste collection in Prague is provided by AVE CZ and other companies.
