The number of requests for granting the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova increased: 4 thousand more than in 2021
The war at the border made the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova much more attractive. Most of the applicants are Russians, have relatives in our country or even Moldovans who renounced our citizenship in favor of those from Russia.
The statistical data provided by the Public Services Agency show that last year the number of people who decided to obtain Moldovan citizenship increased considerably. If in 2021 around 7,100 applications were submitted, in 2022 the figure increased by almost 4,000 and reached 10,800 applications.
“This growth is held by events taking place in the neighboring state. In particular, the requests come from the citizens of the Russian Federation and Ukraine”, said the head of the Directorate of Citizenship and Records of Persons, Alexandru Doni.
It is curious that practically 60 percent of the requests are submitted by people who live in the Transnistrian region. To obtain the document, the applicant must present a set of documents, but also meet certain conditions imposed by law. For example, citizenship can be acquired through recognition by those born on the territory of our country, but also by people who take care of relatives domiciled in the Republic of Moldova. Another way is natural acquisition.
“If he is a foreign citizen, he must have lived in the territory of the Republic of Moldova for at least 10 years. If she is married to a citizen of the Republic of Moldova then this term is three years. If the person is a refugee or benefits from international protection, the residence term is eight years”, said the head of the Directorate of Citizenship and Records of Persons, Alexandru Doni.
Those who previously refused it in favor of the citizenship of another state can also regain their Moldovan citizenship. This is what many of our citizens did to become citizens of Russia. Now, with the war in Ukraine, some decide to return to the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova.
If previously the applications could be submitted at only one Agency headquarters, the one located on Pushkin Street, due to the large number of applications since January 3rd, this service is provided by all ASP representatives in the country. Applicants must register online, after which they must physically submit the application. You can find out more details by accessing the website asp.gov.md.
