The company Technology of the City of Prague (THMP) concluded the main contracts for the purchase of electricity and gas for public lighting in the metropolis with the companies Pražská energetika and Pražská plynárenská.
The estimated price of the purchases is 420 million crowns, and it is not even covered by the government’s price ceiling. THMP spokeswoman Simona Kopová told ČTK. There are about 145,000 public lighting lamps in Prague.
According to the THMP, electric lamps consume about 54 gigawatts (GWh) of electricity annually, while gas lamps consume another six GWh of energy. The ceiling set by the government, valid throughout this year, is 5,000 crowns for one megawatt hour (MWh) of electricity without VAT and 2,500 crowns for one MWh of gas without VAT. Director of the THMP’s renewable energy division, Michal Fišer, said that in the event of a suitable development, the company will be able to move suppliers and thus obtain better conditions.
In connection with the purchase, THMP, which is 100% owned by Prague, obtained a license from the Energy Regulatory Office for electricity trade. “As a registered trader, we will be able to optimally balance between spot and fixed prices, and thus purchase energy as advantageously as possible in the future,” added company director Tomáš Jílek.
Towards the end of the year, the capital also dealt with the purchase of electricity for the municipality and about two hundred of its subsidized organizations, such as schools, theaters, galleries, homes for children and youth or facilities for the elderly. The city first issued a tender, but the council refused to approve the result in December. In the end, the municipality will buy electricity from Pražská energetika, which also won the original tender, at so-called spot prices depending on the current situation on the stock exchange.
